The Lady ‘Riders defeated Three Rivers, 72 – 65, Sat., Feb. 23 as they hosted “sophomore day” at Bob Sneller Gymnasium.
Prior to Saturday’s game, sophomores, including their parents, were honored on the gym floor.
“It [sophomore day] was bittersweet, but it was a lot of fun,” said Chloe Nichols. “I’m glad I got to spend it with these group of girls.”
After Three Rivers scored the first eight points of the game, both teams took turns leading the scoreboard throughout the first half. At halftime, the Lady ‘Riders led 38 – 27.
“They [Three Rivers] jumped out to an 8 – 0 lead, I wasn’t really suprised; with it being sophomore day and the emotion that goes with that,” said Tina Robbins, woman’s head basketball coach and physical education instructor.
During the second half, the Lady ‘Riders held a 15 point lead until the Lady Raiders took control of the court; tieing the game at 60 points with less than four minutes in the game.
Terai Sadler then shot two free throws to give the Lady ‘Riders a 62 – 60 lead less than a minute later.
The Lady ‘Riders kept the lead 68 – 61 with 1:10 left, before Sadler shot four more free throws, and the Lady Raiders scored four more points, before the buzzer ended the game.
Sadler contributed 23 points and seven rebounds, while Camila Lacerda earned 14 points, nine assists and five steals, and Marshall scored 11 points and three assists.
The Lady ‘Riders finished their regular season 25 – 5, before they took the first round bye in the Region 16 tournament.
The Lady ‘Riders then fought to defeat State Fair, 79 – 78, in the semi-finals of the tournament on Mar. 1, before defeating Three Rivers to win the tournament, 81 – 72, a day later.
The Lady ‘Riders will host the winner of the Region 11 tournament this Saturday at Bob Sneller Gymnasium in Neosho at 2 p.m.
