Debate exceeds expectations

The speech and debate team at Crowder has been very ambiguous this semester so far. Logan Johns, educations major and Crowder debator, says, “I am so proud of how much we have accomplished this season. As a pretty young and new team, I feel like we really made great gains in our education. We have learned so much, and I am looking forward to what our next season will bring.”

So far, the team has been able to attend three major debate competitions so far this season. They have attended Kansas Weslyan University in Salina, KS; Missouri Association of Forensic Activities State Tournament in Warrensburg, MO; and Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. They have done well in these tournaments and here are the results:

At Kansas Weslyan University, Billy Ketcherside competed in Extemporaneous Speaking, Informative Speaking, and Impromptu Speaking. Brandon Price and Vikas Yadov both competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. The team as a whole was ranked Top Community College overall, and for their outstanding performances they received first place in Individual Event Sweepstakes and second place in Debate Sweepstakes.

At the Missouri Association of Forensic Activities State tournament, Logan Johns competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Dramatic Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, and Parliamentary Debate. Brandon Price competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Parliamentary Debate, and Impromptu Speaking. Billy Ketcherside competed in Parliamentary Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Informative Speaking, and Impromptu Speaking. Vikas Yadov competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, and Parliamentary Debate.

At this tournament, all students who competed placed in the top 15 in their debate events and top 25 in their speaking events. Because of their hard work, they were awarded the Bill Cue Top Community College Award for the state of Missouri. The group also placed fourth in Overall Presidential Sweepstakes.

At Missouri State University, Logan Johns and Vikas Yadav competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Vikas Yadov also became a national qualifier at this tournament.

Kristen Stout, director of the debate team, says, “Both students were ranked in the top five in their division.” I could not be more proud of all they have done and what they have accomplished.”

The team will be traveling on April 12-17 to Eau Claire, WS to attend the National Forensic Association National Tournament.
