Editorial: Disney Land strikes back

A long time ago in a galaxy not so far, far away . . .
There was a man by the name of George Lucas, who wanted to make his own films, and be free from the major film industries that were monopolizing Hollywood. And so he embarked on his quest and created Lucasfilm. But sadly, Lucas has become the very evil that he fought to resist. Like Darth Vader, he has turned to the Dark Side, by selling his company for $4 billion to one of the biggest major film corporations of our time—Disney.
 “In an interview with The Times in 2008, George Lucas said that his personal connection to the ‘Star Wars’ saga ended with the Ewoks on Endor [the storyline],” according to Herocomplex.latimes.com, while Lucas was still a pure Jedi Knight.
 “‘I get asked all the time, ‘What happens after Return of the Jedi?’ and there really is no answer for that,” Lucas continued. “The movies were the story of Anakin
Skywalker and Luke Skywalker,
and
when Luke saves the galaxy and redeems his father, that’s where that story ends.”
The Star Wars films are the story of Anakin Skywalker. How he’s a savior, how he falls to the Dark Side and how he is redeemed.

So how are there supposed to be more movies when Darth Vader is dead? The films were about Anakin—the other stories of Star Wars, “the expanded universe,” are told in the books, video games and cartoons of Star Wars. NOT the films.
Also, unlike other movies, the Star Wars books tie into the films, expanding the storyline of the movies, and taking away nothing from them. Yes there’s a few hiccups, but are there not in any major project? There are also over 70 books that take place after the events of Return of the Jedi. How is Disney supposed to make a film, or trilogy for that matter, that neatly ties into this universe without destroying this already established and carefully plotted storyline?
In addition, who is directing these films? J.J. Abrams—the director of the latest Star Trek movies. Star Wars and Star Trek are two completely different identities that should never be crossed, archrivals in the nerd universe. Crossing the two—you get things like President Obama saying “Jedi mind meld,” (Huffingtonpost.com). That’s like shouting “Homerun!” at a football game. (There’s a good chance that you might get beat up from the passionate sports fans.)

I agree with you Master Yoda. The Dark Side can only corrupt—destroy. Just as Anakin turned to the Dark Side, destroying the Jedi Order and giving rise to the Galactic Empire, so too will there be devastating effects from Lucas’ conversion. However, Darth Vader was redeemed in his final hours—is their hope that the Star Wars universe may be saved as well?
