The Lady ‘Riders basketball team looks to improve on last year’s 10-20 overall record as they prepare to open their 2014-15 season this month.

After a tough 2013-14 season that featured only one returning sophomore and the remainder of the team containing freshman, the team will consist of seven sophomores, including returning players Tae’lor Monroe, Tiffany Rhame, Mariana Silva and Thays Barbosa. Six freshman will also be on the court for the Lady ‘Riders this season.

Tae’lor Monroe, sophomore point guard, believes teamwork will be the main drive to keeping the team on the same track this season.

“As a team, we just need to have the unity and come together so we can win games and focus on making it to regionals and winning regionals,” said Monroe.

For Destiny Dyson, freshman point guard, getting used to the transition from playing high school basketball to college ball has taken time to get used to and has been an interesting experience thus far in her college career.

“The conditioning is more intense, as well as the weight room workouts are more intense,” Dyson stated. “The competitiveness of practice makes you want to work harder and better yourself more than you did in high school. It demonstrates that you are more hungry.”

Thalita Valerio, freshman guard, is focused on one goal, and the main goal of any athlete in every sport.

“I wanna win,” Valerio said.

Before opening their regular season at home against Eastern Oklahoma on Nov. 1, the Lady ‘Riders will play scrimmage games at Frisco, Texas on Oct. 10, Wichita, Kan. on Oct. 18, and Springfield, Mo. on Oct. 25.
