Our first quote comes from William Hazlitt, English writer and philosopher:

“Those who are at war with others are not at peace with themselves.”

There are times when we become so self-absorbed in our own troubles or battles that we forget to look past our own problems to see the good in others.  We feel miserable, about ourselves or things going on in our life, to the point that it is sometimes hard to give others the benefit of the doubt and trust in them or to acknowledge their good qualities. We become focused on the negative, and that soon becomes all we can see.

If we stopped to take the time to consider others, to acknowledge their strengths and to see the good in their character, we would in turn be helping ourselves to see the positive in our own lives.

As in the words of American writer, William Arthur Ward:

“When we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best in ourselves.”

Can we not learn to let go of our troubles? To see past our problems to see the good in humanity? There will always be rough waters and obstacles to overcome – and everyday may present us with a new battle, but we can never give up hope, on ourselves or the rest of humankind.

My final quote comes from South African social rights activist, Desmond Tutu:

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”
