With the holidays right around the corner, subscribers to the “War on Christmas” will be rearing their ugly heads, ready to spread their hatred and intolerance. An agenda that is shamelessly pushed by media outlets such as Fox News, this “War” detracts from the holiday spirit, shining a light of prejudice and bias in a country that is supposed to recognize separation of church and state. Instead of focusing on the love and joy that are commonly associated with the Christmas season, people put their attention on differences, creating a battlefield out of a once beloved holiday.
Everything possible to complain about, to set boundaries and express differences, is blown out of proportion so certain portions of religious factions can make a show out of the corruption of the world. Never is anyone supposed to recognize the corruption or hatred that dwells in the hearts of those who wish to make a big deal out of saying “Happy Holidays” as opposed to “Merry Christmas,” it is just taken for granted that it is the Christian thing to do.
In the Bible, in John 13:34, Jesus says: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
Nowhere does he give a clause for judgment before administering this love, and during this season when we should be reflecting on his birth, should we not also be an example of his love. Not everyone is going to share the same beliefs, and forcing others to one religion without choice does not gain them a testimony, but rather deters interest.
It is not Christian to judge others, but rather to lead by example; it is not Christian to force others to your beliefs, but rather guide them. With Christmas time upon us, let’s not start a war where there isn’t one, but share in the love and joy of the season.
