President outlines plans

During the 2015 State of the Union Address, President Obama compels Americans to embrace free community college in the United States. If This K20 proposal is made law, it will give all Americans the opportunity to attend community college free for two years. All students who attend community college under this program will be required to maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher, in order for their schooling to remain free. This proposal will provide all Americans with an equal opportunity to attend community college.

“Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do spectacularly well? Or will we commit ourselves to an economy that generates rising incomes and chances for everyone who makes the effort?” President Obama stated in his State of the Union Address. Ron Cole (political science professor) gave his insight on the matter; he believes, in order for us to compete in a global marketplace, we will need to have a more educated population.

 Idea faces opposition

The proposal faces much opposition in the republican controlled congress; many believe that it is not the proper time to be raising taxes. However others see it as an opportunity to build the economy and provide opportunity.

Only 25% of the cost of tuition will fall under the responsibility of the state. However, there are no official plans on how the state and the federal government plans to cover this cost. “Nothing is ‘free’, so who pays the price?” Ron Cole explains when asked about how the proposal will affect the community.

Student speaks out

“There will definitely be an influx of students, but I don’t know if that will be for the better.” Kylie Ehlers (pre-veterinary medicine major) opined about how this proposal will affect Crowder College.
