Superheroes: Powerful flicks to rival mundane movie syndrome

It’s easy to see that superheroes have become a billion dollar franchise, from comic books to action figures, but nothing seems to draw a crowd at movie theaters quite like superheroes on the big screen. Being an avid watcher of superhero flicks, here is a list of my top five favorites.

X-Men (2000)

Sure I had seen superhero films before this one, but this one has always stood out among the rest, raising the bar of quality for what a superhero movie should be. The first X-Men installment is no doubt the best in the series (although Days of Future Past makes a very close second), creating a storyline that is both action packed and allows you to invest in the characters. If nothing else, Ian McKellan’s performance of Magneto makes this a must see.

The Avengers (2012)

This stellar team-up brings together some of the greatest heroes in Marvel history (next to the X-Men, of course), and intersects the storylines of four previously released superhero franchises: Iron Man, Thor, the Incredible Hulk and Captain America. The comical aspects balance the action, making for an enjoyable experience with each viewing. And the interaction between the Hulk and Thor: priceless.

Batman (1989)

In my opinion, no one did Batman more justice than Tim Burton. Taking the Gotham superhero and casting his dark spin on the tale, Burton created a Batman that would not be rivaled in any later installments or remakes. And Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the Joker rang more true to the original character than Heath Ledger’s overrated performance in The Dark Knight (2008).

Iron Man (2008)

Robert Downey Jr. gives a grand performance as Tony Stark/Iron Man, making for an enjoyable superhero movie that is as humorous as it is edge-of-your-seat action. The first in a trilogy, the later installments have failed to live up to the expectations this movie brought to viewers.

The Crow (1994)

A darker superhero tale, The Crow tells the story of a man who is brought back to life to avenge his and his fiancées death. Brandon Lee gives a marvelous performance as Eric Draven, the main character, and it is sad to consider that he died during the making of this film, but he gave a memorable performance that will not soon be forgotten.
