For its seventh consecutive year, the Crowder College Veterinary Technology Club (Vet Tech Club) has sponsored a pet photo contest in honor of National Veterinary Technicians’ Week. The holiday spanned from Oct. 14-19.

The first place winner, Katie Strohl and her dog Amos earned the cover spot for their photo as well as a Grand Prize Pet Package, full of locally donated pet products such as Hill Science food, Meriel animal health products, along with a few other treats. Runners up will be showcased throughout the 12 months of the calendar.

Approximately 300 photos were entered in the contest, a moderate increase from last year’s 275 entries. Photos came from all across the area; from instructors and students, as well as community members.

The photo contest winners are decided each year by an undisclosed panel of judges, many judges having photography or animal related backgrounds.

“I like seeing the connection that animals have with people,” said Vet Tech Instructor, Shawna Estep, who coordinated the event.

Photo submissions closed Oct. 17, and the decided winning photos will appear in the seventh annual Vet Tech Calendar for 2014.

Clarrisa Verploeg, a first year Vet Tech student who helped assemble the calendar, pointed out her favorite winning photo, a close up of a cat’s eye.

“I like the mystery you can see in it,” Verploeg said.

The calendars will be available for sale on campus in late November. They will be sold in the Neosho campus bookstore as well as on other campuses.
