Nov. 1 pets will be up for adoption from the Ag. Department.
“It is the Ag. Departments wish that every animal find a home by Thanksgiving”, according to Stephanie Watson-Bruto, veterinary technology program director. Cats and dogs are gathered from around the different area shelters like Faithful Friends and Joplin Human Society. The dogs are kept in a kennel, and there is a cat room in the Williams Agricultural Building.
The animals are used to assist the students in learning everything from cutting toe nails to vaccinations of cats and dogs, Watson-Bruto said. They will learn everything necessary to work in an animal hospital.
In the whole time Crowder has been adopting the animals out to not only students and employees but to the public as well, they have never had an animal go back to the shelter they came from. A student Jasmine Garrison said “I think the program is great. The animals get adopted into wonderful homes and the adopters get a great companion.”
Not only are the animals taken care of physically, they are also taught obedience training. When they go to their new homes they have the best chance of finding a permanent home. The animals are chosen for their temperament to give the students the confidence to work in their field, said Watson-Bruto.
Anyone is eligible to adopt the animals. Just go to the Veterinary Technology page on the Crowder website to find an application and contract page. There is an adoption fee of $25.
