Pumpkin flavors parade in with Fall

There’s something special about this time of the year; perhaps it has something to do with the freshly fallen leaves in every shade of red, yellow and orange. Maybe it’s the cooler temperatures and warmer clothes that make each day inside or out that much cozier. Or, it could be the scent of something sweet riding on the air: pumpkin.

Pumpkins have been grown in North America for over 5,000 years, according to www.history.com, and people’s love for the flavor is nearly as old. Pumpkins helped the Pilgrims from starving through the upcoming colder months. They made pumpkins into custard shells and also fermented pumpkins into a beer along with persimmons, hops and maple sugar.

Today, pumpkins still play a critical role in how we celebrate Fall. Besides its decorative elements, the flavor still touches the hearts of the masses and marketers have taken note. A list of my top ten unique pumpkin flavored items for the season shows below.

  • Pumpkin Ravioli – made with wanton wrappers and filled with pumpkin, this is one of the most unique uses for pumpkin I’ve heard of.
  • Pumpkin Pringles– as part of a holiday trio of flavors, Pringles has released a few new flavors including cinnamon sugar, white chocolate peppermint and, of course, pumpkin.
  • Pumpkin Pop Tarts– filled with pumpkin pie filling, nutmeg and cinnamon, these might be someone’s new favorite snack.pumpkin2
  • Pumpkin Oreos– they might go great with a glass of milk, but hurry because they’re limited edition.
  • Pumpkin Spice M&M’s– aside from their new pecan pie flavor, M&M’s has released a pumpkin spice latte flavor.
  • Pumpkin Lasagana– made of no ordinary noodle materials, this recipe calls for a pumpkin puree giving a distinct color and flavor.
  • Pumpkin Eggo Waffles– waffles, but with cinnamon-pumpkin flavoring (goes great with syrup).
  • Pumpkin Bagels/Cream Cheese– this creamy pumpkin cheese spread was made to go with their complimenting pumpkin bagel flavor friend.
  • Pumpkin Spice Latte Ice Cream/Starbucks– along with the much anticipated return of the pumpkin spice latte, Starbucks has created an ice cream with the same flavor.
  • Pumpkin Marshmallows-KRAFT released a new pumpkin pie flavor marshmallow (roast for warm pie taste)
