In an effort to pursue a positive environment, Crowder College is celebrating a national holiday, emphasizing random acts of kindness and encouraging all students to participate. Random Act of Kindness Day is officially Feb. 17, but as the campus is closed that day for President’s Day, Crowder is extending the feel-good holiday to Tuesday, Feb. 18.

This comes after planning by Crowder’s professional staff association to replicate an idea found in the Netflix series Kindness Diaries, wherein Leon Logothetis travels from city to city fueled only by the kindness of others.

Leon Logothetis spoke at Crowder College on [date], where approximately 400 Crowder students and community members were in attendance.

Emalie Sorrell, business administration major at Crowder, was in attendance. She explained, “I learned that to live a magnificent life, one has to come from a foundation of service and that kindness is not only beneficial to others, but to you as well.”

To piggyback on this idea, Crowder plans to make a comprehensive list of “random acts of kindness” in which students can participate on Feb. 18, when the campus celebrates kindness. At the end of the day, they hope to update a new list filled with acts of kindness accomplished by Crowder students and staff.

Campus Life director Mark Aubuchon said, “We want to put it in students’ minds that one act of kindness can make a big difference in people’s lives.”

Sorrell reiterated, “I want to be kind because you don’t always know what someone is going through and one small thing could be a big thing to someone else.”

Aubuchon explained how important it was to emphasize kindness in everyday life. “This day is for anybody, whether you know them or not,” Aubuchon confirmed.

The kindness pursuit is not exclusive to one day, however. Though the campus will be filled with students doing random acts of kindness on Feb. 18, the goal is to carry that energy through the entire semester.

“Hopefully by participating in that one event will cause people to think about it more,” Aubuchon said.

By giving Leon Logothetis an opportunity to speak on campus and celebrating Kindness Day, Crowder is making steps to cultivate kindness on campus for Crowder students.
