Jennifer Mercado is a general studies major going into surgical tech. She is involved in Project Now, a program for first generation students to aid students in transferring into university.

Mercado admitted, “I have struggled a few times coming into college because it was all so new,” and goes on, “Crowder doesn’t have the major I plan to have a career in, but I was able to take classes that help, and Crowder even has a plan to open a surgical tech program placed in Joplin.”

Despite the new environment and having to take an extra step compared to some other students, Jennifer has managed herself and talked about how, “…my friends were sure to keep me updated on certain stuff involving like classes and college events, which has helped me a lot.”

Another general studies Crowder College student, Midrea Samuel, commented, “Me and Jennifer share a class together and have already been friends from high school, the class feels easier. We share jokes and get food together sometimes, she’s fun to be around with once you get to know her really.”

Mercado is an avid contributor in her activities with Project Now with her attending such events as volunteering, transfer visit, and workshops they provide. One of the advisors, Kaitlin Barnett, had mentioned, “She seems to care deeply for her friends.”

“It’s nice being a part of Project because they’ve helped me extremely.” Jennifer Mercado even commented, “I would recommend joining for everyone.”

Raised in a small town, growing up with friends around her, and going to college with new faces and new opportunities, Jennifer Mercado is a student with a simple dream and a relatable life that many Crowder students can find comfort in.
