Jimmy Davis, the one legged hippie. Former Crowder employee and soon to be published author. In his life, Davis has had many experiences and adventures, but as of 2016, his life got just a little more interesting.

In 2016, Davis had begun taking sleeping pills (Ambien and Klonopin) to help him sleep better at night. However, with these medicines, you need a solid 8-10 hours of sleep; something Davis didn’t know.

One day on his way to work at Crowder College’s Great Western Dining, Davis fell asleep while driving. His car ended up smashing into a light pole, and Davis was badly injured, his leg taking the brunt of the crash. On July 24, 2020 after 4 years of suffering, his right leg just below the knee was amputated.

After the accident, Davis decided that he was never going to give up, and his goal was to walk again. That’s exactly what he did. As of Thanksgiving day 2021, Jimmy was able to walk through his front door without a wheelchair or cane. Since then, Davis has attended physical therapy and has moved onto bigger things at the YMCA.

Davis says “I couldn’t have done all of this without the help and support of my amazing friends, family and my wife Cheri.” Married for 13 years, Cheri has been Jimmy’s best friend and means the world to him. She has been with him through the accident and was the one holding his hand while he was bedridden for 8 months.

However, Jimmy’s accident isn’t the only interesting thing about him. Davis has lived a very full and exciting life, he has many stories and tales and would love to share them with everyone. Tales, Short Stories and Poems of a One Legged Hippie is Jimmy’s very own book that he has been working on. He has over 450 handwritten pages, and has the goal of publishing at least 10 copies for his daughters and grandkids.

Family aren’t the only ones interested in hearing his stories though. Over time, Jimmy has gained quite a following on social media including about 14.3K followers on TikTok. Many of these followers, and more on Facebook are also interested in his book. As of now, the goal is to have the book fully typed and published by late Spring 2022!

Jimmy’s book is full of many stories from his childhood to well into his adult life. He tells about his family, his friends and many others that he has met throughout his life. There are a plethora of poems, each one full of meaning and passion. Most stories are funny, while others are lighthearted and serious. Davis has worked long and hard writing his story and can’t wait to share it.

His story doesn’t end there either. In July of 2021 Jimmy Davis was featured on KOAM in a story about him searching for his family. At 10 years old, Davis, along with his two brothers, were placed in Elm Acres Children’s Home in Girard, Kansas. Even after his brothers left, he stayed at the home, which he says “was the greatest thing that ever happened to him.”

In 1975 Elm Acres burned down, scattering the 32 kids living there to different homes. Jimmy wants to find them again, which is where the news story comes in. The story was featured on the news as an attempt to reach out further and let others know that he was searching for anyone who went to Elm Acres that he may know.

Thanks to the news, as well as Facebook, Jimmy has been able to find and reach out to more than 5 people from the home. Davis isn’t one to give up, and continues to search for more people to this day.
