Malignant makes stomachs churn

James Wan’s recent horror flick “Malignant,” has a plethora of underlying problems, including a confusing story, a laughable script, and its inability to find a real identity.

The story centers around Madison Mitchell (Annabelle Wallis), a woman with a troubling past who begins to have vivid night terrors of gruesome murders. However, these are more than just scary dreams and in fact moments that are really happening. Throughout the movie there is a sinister presence named Gabriel, a spirit-like being who knows a bit too much about our protagonist and her past. The movie doesn’t hold back on the violence and gore either. Do not watch if you are squeamish, faint at the sight of blood, or are eating.

The biggest problem that I had with this movie was that I couldn’t tell if the movie was intentionally made as an homage to cheesy B movies or if they were really trying to make a genuine horror movie. Perhaps it was a bit of both, but again, it was hard to tell.

Some elements I did like about this movie were the disorienting visuals, the setup of the twist at the end (as silly as it was, it did shock and gross me out), and the trippy soundtrack similar to an 80s horror movie.

I was personally not a fan of this movie and don’t plan on rewatching it anytime soon. However, if you’re in the mood for a horror flick filled with enough violence to make Stanley Kubrick blush and a story reminiscent of a cheesy 1950s B movie, give this movie a shot.
