Sentry wins awards

The student newspaper of Crowder College, the Crowder Sentry, recently won several state awards for the community college newspaper division in a contest co-sponsored by the Missouri Press Association and the Missouri Collegiate Media Association.  

The Sentry staff won 2nd place overall newspaper and 2nd place for sweepstakes, which is a tallying of awards and placements. Other staff awards include 1st place sports page, 2nd place In-depth news reporting, 2nd place information graphic, 2nd place page one design, 2nd place special section or supplement, 3rd place page one design, and 3rd place website. 

The Sentry also won a “First Place with Special Merit” rating in a national contest sponsored by the American Scholastic Press Association based in College Point, New York.

Sarah Jones, El Dorado Springs: 2nd place Multimedia Package, 3rd place News Photography; 

Kherz’den Humphrey, Joplin: 1st place Entertainment Review, 2nd place Story Illustration, honorable mention Editorial Writing; 

Jamie Bratton, Neosho: 2nd place Feature Page; 

Bretton Cole, Neosho: 2nd place Best Overall Newspaper, 3rd place Story Illustration; 

Glory Reitz, Neosho: 1st place Multimedia Package, 2nd place Multimedia Package, 2nd place Best Overall Newspaper, 3rd place Column, Honorable Mention News Writing; 

Miranda O’Berry, Springfield: 1st place Feature Writing, 2nd place Feature Page, 3rd place In-Depth News Reporting; 

Sam Hoover, Wyandotte: 1st Place Sports Photography. 

The Crowder Sentry, advised by Latonia Bailey, provides hands-on practice in reporting, design, photography, video, podcasts, website blogging, and social media content. 

Crowder offers an Associate of Art degree in Communication and includes courses in journalism, public relations, interpersonal communication, and photography.
